Twelve years later, Saleeh, a fierce warrior yearning for his father’s homeland, and scholarly Auda face a new dilemma when a Texan tells Nesib that oil lies beneath the Yellow Belt. The promise of wealth could transform Nesib’s realm with roads, schools and hospitals—if he can secure the coveted black gold.

Set in the early 20th century, during the 1930s, the film opens with a fragile truce between two Arab chieftains: Emir Nesib, Antonio Banderas, and Sultan Amar, Mark Strong. As part of the peace pact, Nesib takes custody of Amar’s two sons, Auda, Tahar Rahim, and Saleh, Akin Gazi, for fifteen years.

At the same time, the American company Texas Oil begins exploring for oil in Arabia. An American oil officer, Thurkettle, Corey Johnson, approaches Nesib with the prospect of rigging crude and transforming the lives of his people through immense oil wealth. Nesib, portrayed as liberal and progressive, grants permission for the oil project, effectively breaking the long-standing understanding that the Yellow Belt should remain a No Man’s Land between Nesib’s and Amar’s domains. This breach unsettles Sultan Amar, a conservative leader who distrusts outside exploitation of their resources.

To ease tensions, Nesib sends a delegation led by Auda to persuade his father to tolerate oil operations, arguing that the wealth could fund hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure that would bring prosperity to their region. Yet the orthodox courtiers around Amar resist such changes, resisting the modern wind blowing through their land.

Meanwhile, Saleh resolves to join his father in opposition, and on his way to Amar’s camp he kills two companions. The act triggers a cascade of violence as other Arabian factions join in to avenge Saleh’s death and push out the American oil venture. Auda does his best to mediate between both sides, but his efforts fail to prevent the widening conflict. He is torn between his loyalties: he loves his wife, Leyla, daughter of Nesib, and he hopes to balance the rigid expectations of his father with the increasingly liberal outlook of his father-in-law’s world.

As fighting intensifies, an overlord who seeks a detente between Auda and Amar shoots from a distance, killing the Sultan. The ensuing chaos brings near disaster for Auda as he faces a ruthless adversary, only to survive when a slave girl intervenes by stabbing the would-be killer in the back. With the threat quelled, Auda returns to Nesib, who treats him with renewed respect. In a strategic turn, Auda proposes that Nesib take a leadership role on the board of Texas Oil to oversee their country’s interests, signaling a possible bridge between tradition and opportunity.

In a moment of personal joy amid the upheaval, Leyla brings news of her pregnancy to Auda, filling him with a mix of pride and humility as he contemplates the future that awaits their family. The film threads together themes of power, wealth, duty, and love against a backdrop of shifting loyalties and a land on the cusp of transformation.
