In an unnamed African town, Shandurai watches with distress as a school teacher is taken away by police.

In Rome, Jason Kinsky, an eccentric English pianist and composer, becomes her employer while she also pursues a path as a promising medical student. Kinsky is in love with her, sending gifts down to her room via the dumbwaiter, each delivery a small, intimate breach of their separate worlds.

One gift is a ring, which leads to an impassioned marriage proposal that she rejects. When asked how he could earn her love, she bluntly shouts, Get my husband out of jail! Only then does Kinsky realize that Shandurai is married.

Shandurai notices a tapestry and some dusted figurines have gone missing, a small but unsettling sign of things shifting around them. Later, Kinsky begins composing with her as his muse, a practice that happens in tandem with her quiet presence in the room, sometimes while she vacuums nearby to keep a steady rhythm of sound and movement.

Hearing his piano riffs, she finds herself drawn to him on a deeper level. Kinsky bargains with an African priest over an undisclosed transaction, a detail that casts a shadow over their fragile bond and hints at forces beyond romance.

Coming home from the school, Shandurai looks up to see Kinsky’s piano being lowered into a truck; he has sold it. From a letter, she learns that Kinsky has raised money to secure her husband’s release, and that the husband is coming to Rome.

The night before his arrival, Shandurai unbuttons the sleeping Kinsky’s shirt and curls up with him in bed, a moment that floats between tenderness and danger. Morning arrives with her husband ringing the doorbell below; Shandurai hesitates, then rises, leaving him waiting by the door as the film ends.

Throughout, the narrative lingers on choices between loyalty, longing, and art, set against the push-and-pull between two cultures and social worlds. The result is a quietly charged tale that refuses easy answers, inviting viewers to reflect on what people owe to one another and what they are willing to risk for a chance at a renewed future.
