Outside a remote mountain village in mid-19th-century Spain, a young boy named Juan bears witness to a brutal murder carried out by the enigmatic Fray Ángel. The killer amputates the ear of one of the thieves and slips the bloody token into his carrying bag before riding away into the stormy night. When Ángel returns to the village, he quickly weaves himself into the fabric of local life, earning the trust and devotion of the widowed mother and benevolent countess, Doña Carlota, and Beatriz, his teenage sister, as well as winning over Juan’s skeptical father figure in the community. The contrast between Juan’s unease and the crowd’s faith sets the drama in motion, casting a shadow over the ordinary rhythms of village life.
Juan’s suspicions grow sharper as Beatriz inexplicably vanishes from her room, and her cat is found nibbling at the dead thief’s ear. His mother’s belief that Beatriz is haunted by something beyond the natural world clashes with Juan’s growing conviction that the friar harbors dark intentions. In his search for rational meaning, Juan finds an ally in Máximo Bretal, a local academic and librarian whose calm, scholarly approach offers a counterpoint to the superstitions swirling around the girl’s illness. Carlota, however, remains wary of Máximo’s skepticism, retreating deeper into her beliefs as the town’s fear and superstition intensify.
Meanwhile, Basilisa, the wife of the blacksmith and a devoted servant to Carlota, frets over the health of her newborn son. A mystic living in a cave voice warns that Beatriz has fallen under a witch’s curse, and Basilisa shares this with Juan, convinced that the mysteriously stored ear might be part of the spell. Yet Basilisa, who hopes to protect her child, later questions the mystic’s claims, choosing to cling to her faith in a safer explanation—even as Beatriz’s condition seems to waver between illness and something unearthly.
A stormy night escalates the danger. Lorenzo del Quinto’s gang crashes Carlota’s home, demanding food and threatening Beatriz with murder if their demands are unmet. One thief locks Juan in a barn stall while Máximo seeks shelter inside the house. Carlota remains steadfast in her charity, inviting the gang to stay, while Máximo is overpowered and tied to a post. The attackers attempt to assault Carlota, but Basilisa breaches the room, Rifle in hand, and the thieves seize the weapon. Carlota’s quick response frees Máximo, who fires the rifle and drives the men away.
As dawn breaks, the gang revisits the mystic’s mountain dwelling, set aflame with hay—believing the friar is inside. Beatriz stumbles into the ashes and witnesses [Fray Ángel] previously attacking and killing the gang with an axe. Beatriz then encounters the friar by a stream, attempting to approach him unmasked, but the friar rebuffs her advances. The tension culminates as Juan is sent to live with his aunt and uncle in Santiago, leaving the village to face the fallout of trust betrayed, superstition stirred, and a chilling restraint that lingers long after the flames die down.
