Karnan, Vishal Krishna, grows up believing that a police officer’s life is glamorous and dripping with bribes, and he rises to become a corrupt and ruthless Sub-Inspector. He quickly forges an uneasy bond with the local don Kaalirajan R. Parthiban, sealing his loyalty by orchestrating the release of Kaalirajan’s four brothers from lock-up after they were arrested for smuggling. This alliance marks a turning point, as Karnan’s attitude brings him into direct conflict with Abdul Kader [K. S. Ravikumar], a sincere constable who tries to oppose the changes and abuses he witnesses, only to face resistance from within the very system he’s meant to serve.

Meanwhile, Karnan’s life takes a personal turn when he meets Sindhu, Raashii Khanna, and falls in love. On Sindhu’s birthday, she is kidnapped by Kaalirajan’s men, but Karnan manages a daring rescue. In a twist, Kaalirajan chastises his own henchmen for kidnapping the wrong person and even offers a rare moment of apology. As a birthday gift for Sindhu, she asks Karnan to save a girl who was targeted by Kaalirajan’s gang, and he agrees, taking on the dangerous mission to rescue Sandhya Pooja Devariya.

Karnan’s uncertain loyalties begin to shift as he reconciles with Kaalirajan and learns that Sandhya possesses crucial evidence against Kaalirajan’s brothers. He tracks Sandhya down and discovers the horrific truth: Kaalirajan’s four brothers kidnapped, raped, and murdered Bhavani, recording the crime on video. A camera, now in Sandhya’s possession, holds the evidence. Karnan retrieves the camera and arranges for Sandhya and her mother to leave for the United States, hoping to shield them from retribution.

Before Sandhya departs, a heart-wrenching conversation reveals to Karnan that he himself bears responsibility for Bhavani’s assault—he had allowed the brothers to escape on the day they abducted Bhavani. This revelation shatters him and sparks a painful transformation. With Abdul Kader noticing the change in him, Karnan begins to pull himself away from his corrupt past and to reclaim his sense of duty, while also pursuing the truth behind Bhavani’s death. He tracks down the brothers, defeats them, and arrests them, though the authorities later discover Bhavani’s corpse and perform an autopsy to confirm the crime.

Driven by the new realization, Karnan presses forward to secure solid evidence. He cannot rely on a single piece of footage alone, and he asks for a one-day window to gather what is needed so that the alleged criminals cannot find loopholes to escape. As he moves through the legal labyrinth, a brutal confrontation with Kaalirajan’s men leaves him badly injured: they attack him while he is vulnerable, burying him alive, but Karnan manages a narrow escape.

The next day, Karnan arrives in court with a bold move. He reveals, in a high-stakes moment, that he is not just one of the four men implicated but “five”—the fifth participant in Bhavani’s tragedy. This admission unsettles the courtroom and shocks the public, who had seen Karnan as a corrupt enforcer rather than a protector of justice. The commissioner allows the police to carry out the capital punishment for the four brothers, and, in a chilling display of consequence, Karnan himself becomes a target of the system and is hanged.

Hours after the hangings, Sandhya and her mother return to Chennai and make a dramatic appearance to reveal Karnan’s innocence and his ultimate sacrifice—he acted to ensure that the real culprits could not escape punishment. The revelation sends a wave of mixed emotions through the public, who had misunderstood him, and his death becomes a somber symbol of accountability.
