Shankaran, Mohanlal grows up in a village where his father Vasudevan’s fame once lit up their days. That fame brought a certain luxury, but it also tempted the young man to chase comforts that could loosen the bonds of a simple, steady life. As the glow of that fame fades, the family faces the hard reality of poverty and a daily struggle to keep life together. Shankaran finds himself unemployed, weighing his responsibilities against the lure of easier options, while Bhama, Ambika, the daughter of the village landlord, harbors a quiet love for him that he does not return with the same intensity.
The villagers, though poor, strive to live decently with whatever resources they have. Yet the weight of scarcity becomes harder to bear, pushing some people toward choices that aren’t entirely virtuous, while others cling to shared values and the small comforts of fellowship. Bhama’s life takes a dramatic turn when she is married off to Mani Iyer, a respected singer, whose world is not immune to the wild temptations that fame can offer. This union underscores how fame’s glitter can both promise and complicate happiness, testing the loyalties and desires of those involved.
In the background, Kacheri Mani Ayyer, Murali, moves through the village with his own set of pressures and ambitions, illustrating how different lives intersect under scarcity and need. The central questions of the film linger: will Shankaran be able to secure work that can lift his family out of poverty, and will Bhama find true happiness again amid the compromises life has demanded?
What follows is a vivid, intimate portrait of life in a poverty-stricken community, where people strive to hold on to their values and to one another. Through moments of music, conflict, and quiet resilience, the film offers a touching, honest look at rural life. It is a diorama of hardship tempered by human connection, where dignity and solidarity become the guiding lights in the face of hardship.
