In a rural village where disputes are settled quickly by a trusted local authority, Viswanathan is a compassionate landlord who serves as the village’s main arbitrator. He lives with his wife and their son, Veerabhadran, and resolves cases on a fast, first-come, first-served basis, striving to be fair even when the line between right and wrong is blurred.

A legal dispute over a vast tract of land pits Viswanathan against his brothers-in-law, the Mangoyikkal Kurups. The court initially rules in his favor, reinforcing his standing in the community. His cunning advocate, Kanaran, teams up with the Kurups and proposes a deal: reclaim the Mala in exchange for half of it.

The next day, Viswanathan is drawn into a mediation with the Kurups and is killed by Kanaran with an ivory tusk, a death that is later manipulated to appear as the result of an elephant attack.

With the patriarch gone, Veerabhadran takes over the family’s leadership and the village’s affairs. The Mala falls into the Kurups’ possession, facilitated by a falsified transfer that Viswanathan is said to have approved before his death. Over the years, the Mala becomes home to numerous inhabitants, all living under the shadow of disputed ownership.

The story unfolds as a meditation on power, deceit, and the way land and loyalty can be redirected through cunning arrangements, leaving a lasting impact on a community that subsists on the land and its delicate balance.
