Mohan Sharma, a successful businessman in Mumbai, marries Aruna late in life. His happiness comes to a sudden end when [Aruna] dies during childbirth, leaving behind a young daughter Uma. Mohan struggles with the sight of Uma, a painful reminder of his lost wife, and his grief drives him to drown his sorrows in alcohol. As a result, Uma grows up largely on her own, growing introspective, withdrawn, and deeply reserved. The burden of the past weighs on her, and the house feels quieter with each passing year. With Mohan’s health slipping from overwork and drink, doctors urge a change of air, recommending a retreat to the cool, tranquil hills of Mahabaleshwar, where a calmer pace might help heal old wounds.

Across town, Arun Mehta, the son of Mohan’s old friend Hari Mehta, is meant to marry Uma. However, Arun’s heart is pulled in a different direction when he encounters Anita Bakshi ‘Annie’, the woman he would rather be with. Arun returns after five years abroad, bringing with him Ashok, a writer and teacher whose blunt honesty and restless spirit often leave him without a steady job. The trio—Arun, Uma, and Ashok—find themselves navigating loyalties, expectations, and the slow churn of change that comes with growing up and growing closer.

When [Ashok] first enters Uma’s life, a real, undeniable spark begins to glow between them.
