Anne Anne Shirley Shirley is an orphan who comes to live on a quiet rural farm with Matthew Cuthbert O. P. Heggie and his sister Marilla Cuthbert Helen Westley. Although they hoped to adopt a boy to help on the farm, Anne’s lively imagination and stubborn warmth quickly win them over and endear her to the surrounding village. Her arrival sparks a flurry of small adventures and earnest missteps that reveal a girl of surprising resilience and a heart full of curiosity.

She soon befriends Diana Barry Gertrude Messinger and forms connections with most of the children at school, save for Gilbert Blythe Tom Brown. After Gilbert teases her by calling her “carrots,” Anne retaliates with a splash of hot-headed action, slamming her slate down on his desk in a moment of impulsive anger. The clash becomes the spark for a long, imperfect romance between them, while Diana cheerfully bets that Anne can win Gilbert’s love—though Gilbert himself has already begun to fall for her, listening from the shadows as their plan unfolds.

The bet sets off a series of flirtations and near-misses. Anne’s attempts to charm Gilbert are awkward and endearing, and, for a time, the bet is won by Diana’s clever manipulation of the situation. To prove her affection and win him back, Anne lies and claims she has a boyfriend, hoping to provoke jealousy in Gilbert; instead, she ends up exposing her own vulnerability and embarrassment in front of the entire town. The emotional stakes rise, and the two teens tread a careful line between pride and longing.

Then comes a pivotal rescue. While she is lost in a moment of reverie as the Lady of Shalott, her boat begins to sink; Gilbert Blythe witnesses the danger and risk, and he saves her life with calm bravery. In the wake of the rescue, Anne chooses to forgive him, and she promises a reward that she believes might restore their fragile bond—a kiss. Gilbert, surprised but ready, declares his wish to be her girl, and the two begin to imagine a future together. Their relationship enters a new phase, and for three years they sustain a secret courtship, a period of hope shadowed by the watchful eyes of the community.

That watchful eye intensifies when Mrs. Barry Sara Haden spies on them and informs Marilla. Marilla, cautious and protective of Matthew’s fragile heart, worries that a romance crossing social lines could reopen old wounds—wounds tied to Matthew’s own past heartbreak. The rift taxes everyone, leaving both Anne and Gilbert feeling devastated and Matthew alternately stern and pleading, caught in the uncomfortable middle of a family quarrel and a young love.

The course of study and change continues as Anne heads off to college. In the meantime, Diana—who is now married—visits to share the news that Matthew is ill. Anne rushes home to Green Gables, only to learn that the family home may be put up for sale to fund a visit to the best doctor in Halifax, where Matthew might find the care he needs. She seeks out Gilbert, who is studying with the same doctor, and a renewed spark of affection rises. Gilbert, ever thoughtful, had pleaded with the doctor to help Matthew for free, an act that speaks to his deep devotion. When Marilla finally learns of the lengths he went to, she forgives the Blythes and, with a tempered warmth, allows Anne and Gilbert to explore their relationship again.

This story unfolds with tender patience, revealing how a stubborn, imaginative girl finds her place—within a family that learns to love her, a village that grows more compassionate, and a romance that endures through trials and time. The world of Green Gables becomes a microcosm of generosity, forgiveness, and the quiet power of choosing love over fear, where every misstep is a lesson and every act of kindness tightens the thread that binds two young hearts.
