Annabelle Sethupathi registers as a largely disappointing effort, with the majority of viewers highlighting a weak narrative and uneven execution. While a few reviewers appreciate occasional humor, the film's disjointed plot, flat direction, and inconsistent performances dominate the consensus. Positive notes focus on isolated moments of visual flair and brief effective chemistry between the leads. Overall, the shortcomings outweigh the sporadic strengths, resulting in a low but not catastrophic reception.
The Movie Echo Score Breakdown for Annabelle Sethupathi
Art & Craft
In terms of art and craft, critics point to flat direction and a lack of rhythmic pacing that hampers the comedic flow. Visual elements such as the palace set and costumes receive occasional praise for their extravagance, yet the overall cinematography and graphics are described as subpar. The editing offers no salvaging impact, leading to a largely underwhelming technical presentation.
Character & Emotion
When evaluating character and emotion, the acting is widely criticized for being wooden and expressionless, particularly for the female lead. Nonetheless, Vijay Sethupathi's performance and moments of chemistry with Taapsee are noted as competent, and Yogi Babu's comic timing provides occasional relief. The ensemble's depth remains shallow, resulting in a mixed but leaning‑negative appraisal of the film's performances.
Story & Flow
The story and flow are described as incoherent, with a clichéd premise and a plot that fails to make logical sense. Reviewers mention that the script is poorly written and the pacing erratic, though a few acknowledge the novel concept of benevolent ghosts and a fresh romantic subplot. Overall, the narrative's shortcomings dominate, leaving the film structurally unsatisfying.
Sensory Experience
Sensory experience draws mixed reactions; background music is often labeled out of place, and graphics are called horrible by several viewers. However, the elaborate palace design and occasional visual flair are praised for adding a distinct aesthetic. The soundtrack does not consistently enhance the viewing experience, resulting in a sensory profile that is uneven but not entirely devoid of merit.
Rewatch Factor
Rewatch factor is low, with many reviewers advising against a second viewing and labeling the film a waste of time. Some suggest it may serve as light‑hearted relief for a stressed audience, and the second half's romance receives modest appreciation. Despite these niche positives, the overall lack of lasting appeal diminishes its replay value.

Two eras orbit a single grand palace, a place that feels destined to be a home and a prison at once. In 1948, Kadhiresan visits the magnificent palace built by King Veera Sethupathi and yearns to claim it as his own. The dream darkens into a chilling history when the palace is haunted by memories and by people who once lived there. By 1966, while cooking for her husband and daughter, Kadhiresan’s niece is possessed. Soon after, the family dies in their sleep, and others who perished within the palace return as whispering echoes. The building seems to breathe with the dead, and Kadhiresan’s own life retreats into isolation as the spirits, including Kadhiresan’s late cook, Shanmugam, remain trapped. Shanmugam claims a grim pattern: a mysterious force drives him to poison the inhabitants every full moon, and only a survivor might unlock their freedom. The ghosts linger, waiting, while the palace stays a sealed chapter of their memories.
In 2021, Rudra’s family of thieves butt heads with two rival groups, drawing attention from Inspector Kadhir, the great-great-grandson of Kadhiresan. Kadhir and his grandfather Vikram want to sell the palace, but rumors of a haunting complicate the plan. Supposedly, Kadhir hires Rudra’s family to clean the property and insists they stay there until the full moon to prove the place is safe, essentially setting the stage for a quick loot if the haunting proves harmless. Rudra’s crew agrees, hoping to seize the estate cheaply, while the palace’s reputation as a cursed site continues to shadow every move.
When Rudra arrives, the air itself seems to tighten. The family schemes to stage a convincing haunting to drive the price down, yet a genuine energy stirs within the walls. Rudra is drawn to the ghosts, and Kadhiresan’s spirit nudges closer, unsettled by the living presence. The ghost of Shanmugam watches with growing unease as Rudra’s resolve strengthens to free them all.
As the palace deepens its secrets, Shanmugam leads Rudra to a hidden chamber—an archive of photographs from the 1940s that reveal a woman who bears a striking resemblance to Rudra. There, the full story unfolds: Veera Sethupathi built the castle for his beloved queen, Annabelle [Taapsee Pannu], whose memory haunts the halls. The romance is thwarted when Kadhiresan refuses to sell, poisoning the couple and setting off a chain of vengeance. The pregnant Annabelle [Taapsee Pannu] dies while swearing vengeance, a moment witnessed by the palace cook. After Kadhiresan and his family move into the palace, Shanmugam poisons their meals, killing them all the next day except for Vikram, who misses the last meal. Since that cruel night, Shanmugam has haunted the corridors, erasing Kadhiresan’s lineage and leaving only Vikram and Kadhir as survivors.
Back in the present, Kadhir’s bid to eject Rudra’s family is thwarted when a mysterious force throws him and his henchmen out of the palace, a sign that the ghosts will not permit interference. Rudra begins to glimpse the truth behind the spectral activity, while Shanmugam’s deceit is exposed to the ghosts, who grow angry at being manipulated. The spirits vow to help Rudra, and a pact forms: if she assists them in finding rightful ownership, they will aid her in return.
A turning point arrives when Vikram returns, convinced that Rudra is Annabelle reborn and determined to kill her to satisfy his grandfather’s ghost. The Kadhiresan family ghosts rally to protect Rudra, stacking their powers against Vikram. A new arrival—the government official who resembles Veera Sethupathi—enters with news that the palace will be seized as a heritage-listed tourism site. The revelation shifts the balance of power: Rudra and her family depart in frustration, while the official confesses his love for Rudra and she responds with a quiet smile. Shanmugam, finally at peace, vanishes. Kadhiresan’s ghost remains behind, still trapped, surprised that freedom has not found him at last.
In the end, the palace finds a different kind of peace: it becomes a living museum of memory and history, safeguarded as a heritage site, while Rudra’s future brightens with the official by her side. The ghosts’ reunion with the living world completes a circle—the hauntings cease, the lovers unite, and Shanmugam’s quiet closure echoes through the walls of the palace.
