In 1918, as the world grapples with the horrors of World War I, Burt Berendsen (Christian Bale) finds himself reluctantly enlisted by his estranged wife’s family to serve. Stationed in France, Burt forges a deep bond with Harold Woodman (John David Washington), an African-American soldier who bravely defies the neglectful cowboy officers. Assigned to serve as Harold’s officer, Burt vows to treat him with fairness, leading them to form an incredible friendship alongside fellow soldier Milton King (Chris Rock). Their commander, Bill Meekins, supports them, ensuring the troops are well cared for amid chaos.

After sustaining significant injuries from the battlefield, Burt and Harold are tended to by the quirky Valerie Bandenberg (Margot Robbie), a nurse whose unique artistic flair transforms the shrapnel she removes from soldiers into art. Following the war, the trio relocates to Amsterdam, nurturing their friendship and lives. Valerie introduces Burt to Paul Canterbury (Mike Myers) and Henry Norcross (Michael Shannon), spies using the guise of the glass eye business to operate in Europe. They offer Burt and Harold their assistance, in exchange for an unclear favor someday.

Burt heads back to New York City, yearning for his wife, while Harold finds himself in a complicated romance with Valerie. However, their relationship falters when Valerie expresses her aversion to returning to her past, stirring complications for Harold who wishes to advocate for the rights of war veterans in the U.S.

Fast forward to 1933, Burt has established a medical practice dedicated to helping fellow veterans, still close to Harold, who has since become a lawyer. Equipped with a glass eye and a determination to aid his patients, Burt continues to innovate pain relief solutions. Yet, a pall hangs over their lives as they have lost touch with Valerie, who has not been heard from since their Amsterdam days.

A twist of fate occurs when they are approached by Elizabeth, Meekins’ daughter ([Taylor Swift]), asking Burt to perform an autopsy on her father, allegedly murdered during his recent European trip. With help from Irma St. Clair (Zoe Saldana), the autopsy uncovers troubling evidence of poison. Tragically, a sudden turn of events leads to Elizabeth’s violent death, framing Burt and Harold as suspects.

Desperate to clear their names, they venture to unearth the truths behind Elizabeth’s demise. Detectives Lem Getwiller (Matthias Schoenaerts) and Hiltz (Alessandro Nivola) begin their pursuit, while Burt proposes leveraging connections to validate their innocence.

Their journey unveils a darker conspiracy involving Tom Voze (Rami Malek), his domineering wife Libby (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Valerie, now under their watchful eye, ensnared by deceitful designs. In a shocking discovery, they learn that Valerie has been poisoned to manipulate her compliance.

Burt’s attempts to reach out to General Gil Dillenbeck (Robert De Niro), a decorated veteran, might reveal crucial information about Meekins’ demise. Irma soon adds to the narrative with the revelation of her own attack, as Burt helps her recover and strengthens their bond.

Facing the immutable threat from the hit-man Taron Milfax ([Timothy Olyphant]), Burt, Harold, and Valerie follow clues leading them to dire confrontations and a shadowy organization, the Committee of the Five. Their path intertwines with their former allies, unveil ties to a fascist coup threatening America’s democracy through clandestine schemes.

As the intricate web of betrayal unravels before them, alliances are tested during a pivotal gala where General Dillenbeck takes a stand against the conspirators. The ensuing chaos leads to arrest and fallout among the conspirators, yet the damage is done, and political slander ensues.

In the aftermath, as friendships are fractured but true courage sees them through, Harold and Valerie determine to leave the confines of a country that denies them peace. Burt makes plans to reclaim his medical practice and explore newfound love with Irma, as the saga of friendship, sacrifice, and resilience continues through the shifting tides of history.
