Nikhil Aftab Shivdasani returns to his home in Lajpat Nagar after finishing his education in the United States. He steps into a bustling, tightly knit Punjabi household that includes his stern father Kulbhushan Kharbanda as Purushottam, his warm-hearted grandmother Dolly Ahluwalia as Beeji, his anxious mother Meenakshi as Seeto, and an ever-suspicious uncle Sanjay Mishra as Chhadami Mama. The family is eager to see him married, and the air is thick with arranged-marriage pressure, traditional expectations, and a constant search for suitable matches. Yet Nikhil isn’t rushing toward matrimony, leaving Purushottam and the rest of the clan worried about where his affections truly lie.

To coax him out of his uncertainty, Purushottam enlists a trusted ally, Manoj Pahwa who plays Hakim, a professional sexologist and family friend. Nikhil confesses a startling truth to Hakim: he’s in love with Aamna, a Muslim girl living in the United States. The revelation unsettles the family’s rigid horizon, since their traditions make a Muslim daughter-in-law a difficult pill to swallow. Hakim, ever the strategist, concocts a plan designed to soften the family’s stance without exposing the romance outright. The core idea is to stage a fake engagement with an American girl, while presenting Aamna as the ally and confidante of that girl, thus nudging the family toward acceptance by contrast.

The plan hinges on Nikki, a carefully crafted foil played by Linda Arsenio as Nikki. Nikki is pitched as an American with strong Indian values, a persona groomed to appear a little spoiled. To give Nikki a credible backstory, Nikki’s childhood album is photoshopped, a fictitious past is woven, and a narrative is built around a suggestive “American” identity that can be gently softened by Aamna’s more traditional warmth. The two women—Nikhil’s intended bride and her American friend—are introduced to the family in a carefully staged sequence: Nikki pretends to have just arrived from the airport, while Aamna presents herself as a down-to-earth, home-loving daughter who cherishes family meals and Punjabi culture.

As the days pass, Nikki pushes the boundaries of the plan, trying to project herself as a questionable match—cooking Western foods, wearing skimpy outfits at times, and embracing a carefree lifestyle. Aamna counters with dependable Punjabi cooking, traditional Indian attire, and a steady, nurturing presence that earns the family’s approval. Chhadami Mama remains wary, suspicious of the ruse, while the rest of the household slowly warms to Nikki’s charms, especially Purushottam, who has a keen eye for the subtleties of family dynamics.

A complication arises when the astrologer delivers a marriage date that is alarmingly close—just four days ahead. With the wedding looming, Hakim, Nikhil, and Nikki attempt one last trick: hire a woman to play Nikki’s mother and raise objections to the union. The plan seems to falter, and tension peaks as the clock ticks down toward the court date.

During a cricket-watching session with the family, Purushottam notices a familiar image—cricketer Michael Clarke’s photo—that triggers a memory. The doctor’s warning about stress resonates, and Purushottam quietly pieces together a larger picture. He realizes the entire setup might be seen for what it is, yet he also sees an opportunity to seize control of the situation. In a bold move, he arranges for the wedding to proceed the following day in court, effectively turning the tables on the plan.

The court scene erupts with confusion when two women claim to be Nikki’s mother, throwing the proceedings into disarray. Chhadami Mama makes a dramatic entrance, rushing to the court to warn Purushottam about the ruse. Yet Purushottam steps out of the courthouse with a smile, having deduced Nikhil’s scheme from the clues around the cricketer’s picture in Nikki’s album. He reveals his own counter-plan, a masterstroke that coerces the family to accept the union of Nikhil and Aamna. The wedding goes ahead as Purushottam anticipated, and the family welcomes Aamna with open arms. The group then celebrates with their favorite casual snack—aloo chaat—gathered at a food stall near their home, a warm and satisfying end to the chaotic journey toward family harmony.
