In the late 1960s setting of San Diego, a gifted young boy named William Miller struggles to fit in with his peers. His life is further complicated by his widowed mother, a stern college professor named Elaine, who strictly bans rock music and harbors a deep fear of pop culture. This rigid stance casts a long shadow over the family, shaping William and his sister Anita in quiet, persistent ways and ultimately pushing Anita to leave for San Francisco, where she aims to become a flight attendant.

By 1973, a fifteen-year-old William is buoyed by Anita’s secret cache of rock albums and a growing dream: to become a rock journalist. He starts writing freelance pieces for underground San Diego papers, catching the eye of the famous rock journalist Lester Bangs, who gives him his first real assignment—an article reviewing a Black Sabbath concert for a modest fee of $35. William slips backstage with the opening act Stillwater, where a guitarist named Russell Hammond takes a wary interest in him, and he is soon drawn into the orbit of Penny Lane, a perceptive young woman who calls herself a “band aid” rather than just a groupie and takes William under her wing.

From there, William’s writing leads him further into Stillwater’s world. A Rolling Stone editor, Ben Fong-Torres, spots William’s piece on Black Sabbath and commissions a larger assignment: a feature article about Stillwater. William is sent on the road with the band aboard their aging but beloved bus, the Doris, where he conducts interviews with most of the group. However, Russell keeps his distance at first, while tension between Russell and lead singer Jeff Bebe simmers beneath the surface. The story deepens as a professional manager, Dennis Hope, is brought in to manage the touring logistics, helping Stillwater push into bigger venues.

Meanwhile, Penny’s life is not without upheaval. She must depart before the band heads to New York, where Russell’s girlfriend Leslie will join them. Penny and her protégées—her “band aids”—lose some ground when a poker game ends with their acts gambled away to another band, a blow Penny ferries with composed resilience. Dennis also arranges a plane to secure more gig opportunities, signaling the escalating stakes of the band’s ascent.

A pivotal moment comes at a New York restaurant party, where William announces that Stillwater will be featured on Rolling Stone’s cover. Penny, seeking Russell’s attention, leaves in frustration, and William follows her to a hotel where he saves her from a dangerous overdose of quaaludes. The next day’s flight—harmed by severe weather—becomes a crucible: aboard the plane, the band members expose long-buried secrets, and the already strained dynamic between Jeff and Russell erupts. In the wake of these revelations, William confesses his love for Penny, and the group is forced to confront the fragility of their ambitions. The plane lands safely in Tupelo, and the emotional impact lingers with everyone aboard.

Back in San Francisco, William arrives at the Rolling Stone offices to finish his article, but he finds the process harder than expected. He reaches out to Bangs for guidance, who urges him to “be honest… and unmerciful.” The editors initially respond with enthusiasm, yet Russell’s lie to the magazine’s fact-checker about the piece’s accuracy undermines the piece. Rolling Stone kills the article, a crushing setback for William. Anita crosses paths with him again at the airport, offering to take him anywhere, and he chooses to return to San Diego, where their mother Elaine greets them with relief and renewed, if wary, warmth.

The band’s dynamics are not left unresolved. Sapphire, one of Penny’s protégés, reproaches Russell for betraying William, and Russell, seeking atonement of sorts, reaches out to Penny, who cunningly gives him William’s address rather than her own. Russell arrives to face William’s mother, who had previously scolded him over the phone during the tour. He offers a sincere apology, and in a quiet reconciliation, he also confirms the article’s details, allowing Rolling Stone to publish it as a cover feature. Penny’s long-cherished fantasy—traveling to Morocco—takes flight as Stillwater continues its tour by bus, marking the end of one chapter and the hopeful continuation of another for everyone involved.
