2c. After a long voyage of 42 years, the ship enters orbit and deploys the Darwin Reconnaissance Orbiter to scout landing sites. The first probe, Balboa, fails during entry when one wing fails to unfold, causing Balboa and its lifting body to explode on-impact. Two backup probes, Leonardo da Vinci (Leo) and Isaac Newton (Ike), touch down successfully and begin a careful, wide-ranging survey of Darwin IV’s ecology, unraveling a landscape that hosts a range of bizarre, sometimes dangerous lifeforms. The mission is guided from the orbiting Von Braun by a supercomputer, while the two probes carry a holographic message to any intelligent life they might encounter. The narration is provided by John C. McGinley.
