In 1947, a radio operator in New Mexico receives a bizarre signal from Roswell and vanishes while tracing its origin. Today, the same signal resurges, traced from the South Pole to the Falkland Islands and back to the United States, where a satellite captures an unknown object sitting on Antarctic snow. James Spader plays Julian Rome, a cryptologist and UC Berkeley professor who is invited to investigate the mystery. He is sent to a remote Antarctic research base that houses a large greenhouse where scientists study genetically modified plants.

There, they uncover what appears to be an alien vehicle frozen inside a massive block of ice. The object is shaped like a shell or pod and is emitting the enigmatic encrypted signal. Once released from the ice, it reveals a surface charged with a powerful static electricity that shocks anyone who touches it. As Julian works to decrypt the message, the group experiments with opening the lid; they succeed, and a viscous liquid pours out while an alien escapes into the frigid air. At the same moment, an airborne virus sealed within the shell begins to spread, melting four scientists from within and wilting the plants, signaling a virulent threat that moves with alarming speed.

The situation draws the attention of the government, which recognizes the global risk posed by the alien virus. A Russian submarine is dispatched to launch a nuclear missile at the base before the threat can spread. As the submarine nears its firing position, Julian manages to establish communication with the alien, learning enough to realize that allowing any survivors to leave would trigger a pandemic capable of destroying life on Earth. With the countdown ticking, a decision must be made to halt the disaster.

Just seconds before the missile strikes, Julian and three others—Shelly Klein, Dr. Kate Brecher, and Dr. Alexi Gierach—are rescued from the base by an alien spacecraft that homed in on the same signal Julian has been studying. Aimee Graham as Shelly Klein, Janine Eser as Dr. Kate Brecher, and Nikolai Binev as Dr. Alexi Gierach accompany him to safety, their fates intertwined with the global stakes.

In the aftermath, the government launches a cover-up, claiming that a meltdown of an experimental nuclear reactor at the base caused the catastrophe and killed everyone there. The film closes with the alien spacecraft carrying the surviving humans away from Earth, continuing its voyage beyond the Solar System. The story blends tension, science, and the unknown, presenting a relentless countdown where curiosity and caution collide, and where one unexpected alliance may be humanity’s only hope.
