Accomplices 2009

Two police detectives in Lyon, both single and childless, investigate the murder of a young man named Vincent, whose body is found strangled in the Rhône. The case gradually reveals a grim underside: Vincent led a double life as a high-end male prostitute, using the internet to meet clients in hotels and quietly expand his earnings. His girlfriend, Rebecca, a student, was drawn into his world and recruited to join him in threesomes, a move that widened his client base and boosted his finances.

One encounter goes wrong when the client starts to get rough with Reb, and Vincent intervenes, delivering a beating before the two flee. Furious at the way Reb has been treated, Vincent decides to blackmail the man and arranges a rendezvous on the top floor of a multi-storey car park. After handing over the money, the client attacks Vincent, and Reb wades in with her motorbike helmet. Her blows kill the man, and the pair quickly hide his body in his car and run.

The tension does not end there: the pimp, Hervé Cagan, tracking his share, confronts Vincent in a volatile confrontation that ends with Vincent’s death as the pimp strangles him and dumps the body in the river. The investigators move quickly to charge Hervé Cagan with murder, but Reb remains uncharged. As Reb is young, in love with Vincent, and pregnant, with her mother standing by her, the authorities end up doctoring her statement to exonerate her, a choice that underscores the film’s tension between truth and sympathy in a careful, restrained investigation. The case unfolds with a measured, clinical eye, painting a portrait of a city where desire, loyalty, and the moral lines detectives must navigate collide under pressure.
