In 1994, freshly released from Rikers Island, Inez de la Paz (Teyana Taylor), a hairdresser with a troubled past, returns to her familiar neighborhood in Brooklyn. There, she encounters her son, Terry (Josiah Cross), mingling with other children from his foster home. The situation takes a dark turn when Terry ends up hospitalized following his attempt to escape. In a clandestine visit, Inez learns of his painful earliest memory—being left alone on a street corner at the tender age of two.

With the prospect of Terry being moved to yet another foster home looming, Inez’s heart aches as he accuses her of abandoning him repeatedly. Desperate to reconnect, she boldly offers him the chance to live with her. The impulsive decision leads to her abducting him from the hospital, where they flee to Harlem, the place from which she had many bittersweet memories.

Inez and Terry navigate a series of residences as she works to save money, eventually landing a job at a nursing home. During a revealing conversation with Ms. Annie (a brief roommate), it becomes clear that Inez’s past is scarred by the cracks of an epidemic that claimed her parents. To forge a path for a brighter future, she arranges for a false birth certificate and social security card for Terry, enabling him to enroll in school. In a twist of fate, she rekindles her relationship with an old flame, Lucky (William Catlett), a fellow thief. Though apprehensive about their situation, Lucky marries Inez and vows to care for Terry. The couple invests their hopes in Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s vision for a revitalized city, longing for a better life for their son.

Despite the evolving backdrop of Harlem and the troubling rise of police brutality under Giuliani’s policies, Inez manages to maintain a home with Terry. However, as the years roll on into 2001, the strain on her marriage with Lucky grows due to his frequent absences and infidelities. Remarkably, Terry, undeterred by the chaos surrounding him, excels academically and receives a recommendation for placement in a specialized STEM school. Torn between his dreams of becoming a composer and his parents’ aspirations, he eventually agrees to take the placement exam, fueled by Inez and Lucky’s insistence.

As Inez grapples with the crumbling of her marriage, Lucky affirms his love for Terry, nudging him toward a brighter future. Meanwhile, a new mayor, Michael Bloomberg, ushers in further changes as local institutions give way to national chains and luxury developments.

Fast forward to 2005, and Lucky is battling cancer in the hospital as Terry prepares for college. Amid the turmoil, their landlord attempts to evict them from their long-time apartment. As Terry navigates the complexities of forging documents for his job application, the truth ultimately unravels, leading to a shocking revelation that social services are about to intervene. In a heart-wrenching moment, Terry races to warn Inez, but she manages to catch her breath just in time to evade them. Their world shatters when Terry learns that Inez is not his biological mother, propelling him into another foster home.

Determined to find her, Terry escapes and returns to the apartment at the urging of Inez’s best friend, Kim. He discovers Inez, who is now packing her belongings. In an emotional confession, she clarifies that she is not the mother who abandoned him, but rather the woman who has loved him as her own. As they share this profound moment, Terry reassures her of his love, even as they prepare to part ways once more. With uncertainty ahead, Inez promises him, > “This isn’t goodbye.”
