In the year 1960, a young boy named Calogero resides in Belmont, an Italian-American working-class neighborhood in the Bronx. He lives with his father, Lorenzo, a bus driver for Surface Transit (later MTA), and his mother, Rosina. Calogero quickly finds himself captivated by the local Mafia presence, particularly the formidable boss, Sonny. One fateful day, he witnesses Sonny shoot a man who attacks his friend. When questioned by the police, Calogero chooses silence, marking the start of a complex relationship with the notorious figure.

As the story unfolds, Sonny’s men approach Lorenzo with a tempting job offer that provides more financial security, yet he turns it down, adhering to his values of lawful living. A bond forms between Sonny and Calogero, who affectionately adopts the nickname “C.” Eager to earn a living, Calogero helps out at Sonny’s bar and engages in dice games, much to Lorenzo’s dismay when he discovers the cash and insists on returning the money to Sonny, warning him to keep his distance from Calogero.

Fast forward to eight years later, we find a now 17-year-old Calogero still frequenting Sonny, unbeknownst to Lorenzo. Involvement with a gang of local boys raises Sonny’s concerns for Calogero’s future, as he desires to steer him away from a life of crime. Calogero’s world expands with the arrival of Jane, an African-American girl who captures his attention, igniting the flame of young romance despite the racial tensions between their communities. Seeking Sonny’s guidance, Calogero borrows his car to impress Jane.

Tragedy strikes when Calogero’s friends assault a group of African-American cyclists, one being Jane’s brother. This incident leads to a confrontation during their date, where insults fly and Calogero, in a moment of anger, lashes out and racially offends Jane’s brother. Distressed by his actions, Jane leaves with her brother, leaving Calogero alone with his guilt.

Confronted by Lorenzo after he sees Sonny’s car in Calogero’s possession, a fierce argument ensues, prompting Calogero to storm out. This was just hours before calamity strikes; escalating tensions result in a plan of vengeance against the African-Americans, which again finds Calogero caught in the crossfire. Even as a bomb is discovered on Sonny’s car, Calogero remains devoted to him, but a fateful confrontation leads to Sonny allowing Calogero to leave.

In a twist of fate, Calogero rushes to thank Sonny for his influence in his life, only to find tragedy waiting—Sonny is shot in the back of the head moments before Calogero can warn him of danger. The shocking revelation follows that this young assassin came seeking revenge for his father’s long-ago death, further entrenching Calogero in a world of chaos.

At Sonny’s funeral, the outpouring of grief reveals a stark truth—while many pay respects, few genuinely mourn his passing, reflecting Sonny’s own acknowledgment of how little his death would affect the scene. Just as the crowd disperses, a lone figure named Carmine approaches Calogero, sharing that Sonny had once saved his life too. As Calogero begins to recognize him, he recalls the scar on Carmine’s forehead—a reminder of Sonny’s past heroism.

In their exchange, Carmine assures Calogero of his support should he ever need it while also symbolizing a continuation of Sonny’s legacy in the neighborhood. Just as Lorenzo arrives to pay his respects, he expresses gratitude for Sonny’s previous intervention in Calogero’s life and admits to harboring hidden resentment towards Sonny for forcing Calogero to grow up too fast.

The narrative concludes with Calogero bidding farewell to Sonny, walking home with Lorenzo while reflecting on the invaluable lessons imparted by his two mentors. This tale captures the essence of loyalty, conflict, and the harsh realities of life steeped in both love and loss.
