After World War II, Master Sergeant Joe Lawrence, Richard Widmark, is stationed in the ruined streets of occupied Berlin, where the human cost of the conflict lingers in every doorway and alley. Amid the tension, he crosses paths with a group of German orphans and their caretaker, Maria, Mai Zetterling, whose quiet courage and warmth draw him in. Maria dreams of a fresh start for the children in Brazil, a plan she hopes will come together with the help of her employer, Hans Fischer, Eric Pohlmann, a powerful and calculating German contractor.

Hans makes it clear in no uncertain terms that Joe should stay away, but the soldier’s growing feelings for Maria keep complicating the situation. Maria gives him a glimpse of hope, yet she also confesses the strain of her situation: she cannot easily break free from Hans’s grip, and she reluctantly submits to his kisses when he controls the travel arrangements she seeks. Undeterred, Joe stretches his courage and determination, and a fragile romance begins to blossom even as danger looms around them.

On the military side, Joe’s old friend and ally Sgt. Roger Morris, George Cole, hints at a spectacular prize hidden in a four-shipment transfer of Reichsbank gold bullion to England. This revelation sets Joe on a bold, if perilous, course: hijack a transport plane and seize the gold. The plan gains a crucial ally in the form of the seasoned crook Alfie Stratton, Donald Wolfit, who can stage the crime’s aftercare and disposal. Alfie brings in Brian Hammell, Nigel Patrick, an ex-RAF pilot, to provide the guard and protection the scheme needs.

The audacious operation unfolds with nerve and risk. A C-47 is hijacked and diverted to an abandoned airstrip in England, and for a tense moment the crew seem to have the upper hand as only part of the bullion is unloaded. Yet the miracle of caution fades as the ship’s crew manage to retake control, and as they ready for takeoff the aircraft crashes into Alfie’s car—used to light the runway—bathed in flames. The would-be conspirators vanish from the scene, while the airplane’s crew survives, leaving Joe and his associates to reckon with the fallout.

Believing they have killed three men, Joe resolves to return the gold and surrender, a choice that prompts Roger and Dan to rethink their own positions. Alfie, who senses the lure of a crime spree rekindling, is quickly assessed and released on the promise of a £5,000 payment to Dan, provided by Joe as part of a grim compromise. But Brian Hammell—unbowed and ruthless about his stake in the loot—refuses to yield easily, and a new sequence of violence unfolds.

A brutal confrontation follows. Roger falls to his death, and Joe is knocked unconscious. When he comes to, he chases the determined Brian, who clings to the edge of a rising drawbridge in a desperate bid to escape. The struggle ends with Brian losing his grip and plunging into the water far below, leaving Joe to confront the consequences of the day’s chaos.

Back in Berlin, the trial looms over Joe as he is brought for a court-martial, yet the sight that greets him is hopeful: Maria and the orphans are finally leaving for Brazil, a symbolic glide path toward the future they have long sought. The film closes on a note that blends quiet romance with hard-won resolve, as Joe faces the cost of his choices and looks toward an uncertain new beginning.
