Shortly before World War I erupts, Myra Carson, an Englishwoman living in the British West African town of Accra, is caught up in a local scandal and is forced to leave. As her ship stops in Douala, then part of German West Africa, war is declared and she is placed under German internment, confronting uncertainty and danger.
