Alexander Kirkland: Movies & Box Office

William Alexander Kirkland (born September 15, 1901 in Mexico City) was a prominent leading man of Hollywood's early sound era and a distinguished stage actor associated with New York's avant‑garde Group Theatre. Raised in a family with a naval legacy—his grandfather was Rear Admiral William Alexander Kirkland—he attended the Taft School in Connecticut before studying at the University of Virginia and later the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. While in Philadelphia, Kirkland launched his acting career at the Hedgerow Theatre, eventually making his Broadway debut in The Devil to Pay. His talent quickly caught the attention of film studios, and by 1929 he was active in movies, starring opposite Tallulah Bankhead in Tarnished Lady (1931) and appearing in titles such as Charlie Chan's Chance (1932), Social Register (1934), A Passport to Hell, Devil's Lottery, and A Face in the Crowd (1957). In addition to acting, he penned short stories for national magazines, demonstrating a versatile creative streak. He also voiced characters on radio, notably David Brewster in the soap opera Big Sister, Curt Lansing in John's Other Wife, and Russell Barrington in Society Girl, showcasing his adaptability across media.

Kirkland’s personal life was as colorful as his career. He married three times: first to entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee (1942‑1944), a union that ended after a brief separation; then to socialite, actress, and TV producer Phyllis Adams Jenkins (1944‑1950), with whom he had one daughter, Alexandra "Sandy" Marsh; and finally to former Ziegfeld Follies performer Greta Jacqueline "Jackie" Baldridge (1959‑1972). Beyond the footlights, he toured with the Yale Puppeteers and later worked at the Turnabout Theatre in Los Angeles, a hub for experimental performance from 1941 to 1956. In the 1950s he owned an art gallery in Palm Beach and purchased the historic Villa del Sarmiento estate. After his third wife’s death, he was linked to British actress Margot Grahame. Kirkland spent his final years in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and passed away around 1986 in Alimodian, Iloilo, Philippines, leaving behind a legacy of artistic daring and cinematic charm.
