The Hell with Heroes 1968

Set in 1946, after World War II, two former United States Army Air Forces pilots, Brynie MacKay and Mike Brewer, are drawn into a precarious scheme by a shadowy international smuggler named Lee Harris. The plan is to fly to France carrying a cargo presented as Egyptian cotton, but Brynie quickly discovers the true cargo is contraband cigarettes, a revelation that twists the mission from a straightforward postwar job into a high-stakes hustle.

Facing pressure from Harris, Brynie tries to leverage the situation for more money, sparking a dangerous game of cat and mouse. In retaliation, Harris plants narcotics on Brynie’s aircraft and alerts Col. Wilson of U.S. Counterintelligence, setting a trap that could ruin both pilots’ chances of returning to civilian life. The stakes rise as impounded aircraft and seized funds tighten the noose around the men, forcing them to navigate a maze of deceit and danger.

With the aircraft grounded and the money on the line, Elena, Harris’s mistress, steps in to aid them, becoming a crucial ally in a world where loyalty is costly and shifting. Elena’s involvement adds a volatile layer to a scheme already built on risk, while Harris presses for twelve more illegal cargo flights, insisting that fear will keep the pilots under his control. Mike warns that proceeding could spell their end, but the plan presses forward, drawing the two pilots deeper into Harris’s web.

The tension culminates when Mike attempts to trap Harris by informing Col. Wilson of the smuggling. Harris, who is flying with the two pilots, shoots Mike, but Brynie manages to knock Harris out of the air and into custody. Fearing Harris’s gang might converge at the prearranged destination, Brynie makes a bold move, landing at an abandoned military air strip and guiding Wilson to the stash of contraband. Elena stays by his side as they slip away toward North Africa, hoping to shake the chase.

When Harris finally closes the gap, Brynie confronts him, subdues the smuggler, and hands him over to Wilson, a turn of events helped by the earlier deal Mike had struck. The immediate danger subsides, and the odds tip toward a fragile sense of resolution.
