Postwar pilots recruited by international smuggler

In 1946, Brynie MacKay and Mike Brewer, two former USAAF pilots, struggle to return to civilian life in North Africa. They are forced to work for Lee Harris, an international smuggler who will fund their escape only if they carry out dangerous runs. The men hope the money will help them leave their perilous past behind.

Assignment to smuggle cargo under cover of cotton

Harris assigns them to fly to France with a cargo of Egyptian cotton as a cover. They soon realize the real cargo is contraband cigarettes and that their payment depends on continuing the dangerous runs. Brynie extorts Harris for more money before agreeing to proceed.

Narcotics planted; Col. Wilson informed

Harris plants narcotics on Brynie's aircraft and uses the evidence to inform Col. Wilson at U.S. Counterintelligence. The pilots suddenly face a legal trap as the contraband is linked to them. This action heightens the danger surrounding their mission.

Aircraft impounded and money seized

Brynie's aircraft is impounded and his money seized as punishment for the earlier extortion. The stakes rise as their ability to leave is suddenly blocked by the smuggler's leverage. The pilots must navigate a tightening noose.

Elena intervenes; promise of more flights

Elena, Harris's mistress, comes to Brynie's aid, aiding in his precarious situation. Harris exacts a promise for 12 more illegal cargo flights from the pair to keep them under his thumb. The threat of violence hangs over their heads as they weigh their options.

Mike warns of deadly consequences

Mike cautions that continuing the smuggling scheme will get them all killed. The warning underscores how fragile their new life could be if they stay on Harris's payroll. The tension between loyalty and survival intensifies.

Mike's attempt to trap Harris ends in tragedy

Mike tries to trap Harris by informing Col. Wilson about the smuggling runs. Harris kills Mike during a confrontation aboard the aircraft, but Byrnie fights back and knocks Harris unconscious. The balance of power shifts, though the danger remains.

Abandoned airstrip standoff and discovery

Fearing Harris' gang will meet them at the planned destination, Byrnie lands at an abandoned military airstrip. He informs Wilson where the contraband can be found and prepares to expose the operation. The clock is ticking as pursuit closes in.

Confrontation and release

Harris tracks them down, but Byrnie overpowers him and hands him over to Wilson. Because of Mike's earlier deal, Harris is released, which complicates justice and leaves the smugglers in limbo. The danger has not fully passed.

Escape to North Africa with Elena

Byrnie, with Elena at his side, escapes to North Africa to put distance between Harris's gang and themselves. The immediate threat is behind them, but the future remains uncertain.
