A Nice Little Bank That Should Be Robbed 1958

Max Rutgers is an auto mechanic who feels stuck in a loop, his hopes for a future with his sweetheart Margie Solitaire stalling despite five long years of promises to wed. He dreams of a steadier life, but money never seems to follow those dreams, and the daily grind leaves him restless and frustrated.

His best friend, Gus Harris, knows a lot about racehorses, even though he keeps failing his licensing exams to become a licensed trainer. The two men share a hunger for a bigger break, and they hatch a reckless plan to end their dry spell. In a bold, improvised stroke of misfortune, they pull off a bank robbery and walk away with $28,000.

With that windfall, they buy a promising horse, Tattooed Man, hoping the animal will change their fortunes. But their luck takes another twist when an acquaintance—cabby and bookie Rocky Baker—gets wind of the money and wants to cut in on the deal. What begins as a risky gamble on the track spirals into a more dangerous scheme as they decide to bet their life savings on Tattooed Man’s next race.

The horse wins the race, but not by the ropey rules they hoped. Tattooed Man is disqualified for a rules infraction, leaving Max and Gus desperate and furious at how their luck has twisted again. The bad news pushes them toward a more desperate plan: rob another bank, in the hopes of reclaiming what they’ve lost and then some.

A string of cascading complications follows. Teller Grace Havens is taken hostage, the vault sits on a timer and cannot be opened until morning, and bank manager Milburn Schroeder becomes an unwilling passenger in the caper when the getaway car Margie had anticipated is not there. The tension rises as the trio’s plan unravels under pressure and scrutiny from the authorities.

When the police finally trace the criminals to Margie’s house, Max, Gus, and Rocky are hauled off in handcuffs, their brief dream of easy money dissolving into the stark reality of consequences. Yet, as they sit behind bars, a radio broadcast breaks through the quiet of their confinement: Tattooed Man has won the big race. The victory, heard in the midst of their capture, casts a strange glimmer of fate over their ill-fated endeavor, offering a final, ironic twist to a story built on bravado, botched luck, and a stubborn belief that a bigger score could finally change everything.
