Meek, soft-spoken Erwin Trowbridge has had enough of the people who run his life: his sneering brother-in-law Clarence Dobbins, his unappreciative boss J.G. Carver who runs a greeting-card business, and his unsupportive wife Audrey Trowbridge. A night of drinking lands him in a hotel bar, where the lights, the noise, and the mood pull him into a moment of reckless honesty.
In that same room, he overhears Charlie and Frankie lamenting their run of bad luck betting on horses. Seizing the chance, Erwin offers his pick for the next race. The pair initially ignore him, but when Erwin proves right, their friend Patsy bets the little money they have left on Erwin’s next choice. That gamble pays off handsomely, and so do all of Erwin’s subsequent selections that day, turning the trio into overnight luck and filling them with a bold, gleeful sense of control. They decide to keep this sudden windfall as a kind of secret treasure, a goldmine that could change everything.
Patsy tries to do Erwin a good turn by calling his boss to demand a raise for him as his “manager,” hoping to elevate Erwin’s status and earnings. The plan backfires, and Erwin is fired. The setback stings, but Patsy pushes him to see the upside: he receives 10% of the winnings, and Patsy convinces him that he can make more money from betting than from writing greeting card poems. The lure of real money and real power begins to sound sweeter than poetry.
The very next day, Erwin makes his picks again but discards his first choice for the sixth race. Charlie grows suspicious, and a murmur of doubt starts to spread among the trio. Fear of being double-crossed gnaws at them all. Patsy pushes Erwin to gamble everything on his second selection for that race, a demand that clashes with Erwin’s earlier confession to Patsy’s girlfriend Mabel that he never bets on horses because he worries it would take away his knack. The three men, along with Mabel, head to the racetrack to watch the outcome unfold.
The race scene is tense: Erwin’s discarded first pick wins by a narrow margin, just edging out the second choice. Back at the hotel, Patsy’s temper explodes and he begins to beat Erwin. Then they hear on the radio that the winner has been disqualified, a twist that jolts the room and fuels Erwin with a new burst of resolve. He retaliates, punching Patsy back, and when Clarence arrives, Erwin punches him as well. Into this charged moment steps Carver, who is desperate to fulfill a contract for Mother’s Day cards and offers Erwin a raise and a new office. Audrey’s pragmatism persuades him to accept the offer. With the deal in place and the money secured, Erwin bids the gamblers goodbye, declaring, with a quiet mixture of relief and resignation, that having finally bet for real, he has somehow lost his knack.
