A Little Bit of Soul 1998

Dr. Dr. Richard Shorkinghorn is a researcher obsessed with understanding progeria in chickens, convinced that his work could illuminate the aging process in humans. When his grant requests are rejected, he clings to fragile whispers of support from philanthropist Grace Michael Grace Michael, whose husband is the formidable Godfrey Usher Godfrey Usher, the Federal Treasurer. An invitation arrives for a weekend at their country estate, and Richard agrees, wary yet hopeful, as the promise of resources and rare insight glimmers on the horizon. Also present is Kate Haslett Kate Haslett, Richard’s former assistant and ex-girlfriend who has followed a parallel path in the same line of inquiry, making the social dynamics at the estate tense and charged.

At the sprawling manor, social grace and old money mask underlying tensions. A drunken dinner reveals tension and desire: Godfrey mutters about his own economic ignorance while Grace—ever ambitious—makes a clumsy bid to draw Richard into a closer, more intimate orbit. The mood lurches further when Sue Harrington, a fellow guest who remains unseen, appears to have died under suspicious circumstances. In the wake of her death, their hosts reveal a chilling secret: they are Satanists who, with unsettling ease, award Richard and Kate a million-dollar research grant—an alliance that quickly blossoms into marriage. The couple’s work takes a dramatic turn as they discover a virus with the potential to regulate the aging process, a breakthrough Richard chooses not to disclose, a decision that fuels Grace’s mounting irritation.

As tensions escalate, an occult ritual atmosphere intensifies: Grace’s insistence on secrecy collides with Richard and Kate’s ethical boundaries, and a series of perilous events culminates in a life-or-death moment. They are saved when Dr. Sommerville, once Kate’s fortune-teller and now a Satanist ally, intervenes. The political backstory thickens as Godfrey, who has risen to Prime Minister, pushes the case to the police, insisting that Richard murdered Sue Harrington. The courtroom confrontation strains Richard to the breaking point as the defense’s economic questions probe the logic of his actions. Faced with relentless scrutiny, Godfrey’s own philosophy—nihilism and a disdain for ordinary moral limits—slips into a troubling confession, revealing that he is the true architect of the murder.

In the aftermath, Richard and Kate abandon public science. They choose a quieter life, opening a small pharmacy that carries a limited run of unlabelled bottles, which they distribute selectively to a careful circle of customers. The partnership remains intact, forged in secrecy and bound by shared discovery, but the world at large remains oblivious to the delicate balance of science, power, and peril that forged their path.
