In outback Queensland, John Woldring, a widowed farmer, lives in near total isolation until Tahmeena, a traumatized Afghan refugee, collapses near his farm. Barriers of language and culture complicate their first attempts at trust, but a shared sense of being outsiders slowly draws them together.
John is ostracized by locals who suspect him of foul play regarding his wife’s death, while Tahmeena has fled the Taliban with her daughter and has been brutalized and separated from her child. She has been treated as property by the corrupt local pub owner Bob Potter, yet she escapes after a brutal assault. The pair struggle to communicate, and John must keep Tahmeena’s presence secret from nosy neighbours and from Police Sergeant Sgt. Carl Allen, who grows increasingly suspicious.
Over time, the two reconcile their differences and form a fragile bond, finding quiet solace in a shared sense of isolation. They work together on a large jigsaw puzzle, a visual representation of the sky that remains unfinished—the unfinished sky—which lends the film its title and a recurring motif of possibility amid uncertainty.
Tahmeena wins acceptance from John’s loyal dog, learns to drive the tractor, and even drops-kicks a football, as she begins to feel a sense of belonging. She also discovers photos of a younger John and his wife, their likeness stirring complex emotions and shading her trust with doubt.
A trip to Brisbane follows a lead about Tahmeena’s estranged daughter, but the lead proves false and leaves her distraught. Their hesitant romance deepens, but trouble returns when Bob Potter and his brother, Mike Potter, reappear to reclaim their supposed property. The confrontation escalates into a violent clash, with the dog caught in the crossfire. John defends himself and Tahmeena, while Potter shoots his own brother and is quickly captured. Sgt. Carl Allen arrives, and Tahmeena recognizes him as her attacker and Potter’s accomplice. He gains the upper hand over John, but she strikes him from behind, turning the tide.
In the aftermath, John locates Tahmeena’s daughter and brings her to Tahmeena in a refugee detention center. The film closes on an unresolved but hopeful note, suggesting a possibility for healing and a future beyond the immediate danger.
