After the devastating aftermath of World War II, many immigrants in Cuba found themselves in desperate situations, often unable to obtain visas to enter the United States legally. In an environment filled with risk and danger, a human smuggling operation led by Palinov, a café owner from the Levant, emerged as a shadowy solution for those seeking a new life abroad. This ring facilitated illegal crossings into the U.S., but their activities were fraught with peril, especially after the tragic death of one of the immigrants involved.

To dismantle this operation, an American agent named Pete Karczag is dispatched to Havana. To infiltrate the smuggling ring, Pete adopts the identity of a Hungarian immigrant in need of Palinov’s services. Throughout his covert investigation, he encounters Marianne Lorress, a young, impoverished Austrian woman who survived the horrors of the Buchenwald concentration camp. Marianne is anxiously waiting to be smuggled into the United States, hoping for a fresh start but haunted by her past. Pete devises a risky plan, intending to use Marianne to gather critical details about Palinov’s next move, including the time and location of his smuggling operations.

As Pete and Marianne grow closer, a complication arises—Pete falls genuinely in love with her, which makes his mission more complicated. He persuades Marianne to stay in Cuba, believing it’s safer for her to remain there than to risk everything in a dangerous smuggling expedition. However, Palinov uncovers Pete’s true purpose and, in a confrontation, exposes Pete’s identity and intentions to Marianne. Enraged and betrayed, Marianne decides to go ahead with the smuggling plan, trusting Pete and risking everything for a chance at a new life.

Palinov’s treacherous plans take a perilous turn when he learns of Pete’s interference. The smuggler seeks to eliminate Pete by having him killed, leading to a tense confrontation. Pete, resourceful and determined, manages to wrest crucial information from Palinovov and reports it to his superior, James Craig, who plays a key role in coordinating efforts to stop Palinovov.

In the meantime, Palinov and Marianne board a plane bound for the United States. Unfortunately, American authorities are tracking the flight, and the aircraft cannot refuel in Florida. To escape capture, Palinov and his pilot crash the plane into the Florida Everglades, a vast and treacherous wilderness. Palinov’s desperation deepens as he attempts to reach a hidden boat on a nearby river, forcing Marianne to accompany him. During the chaos, Palinov kills one of the passengers trying to board their boat, and the remaining passengers flee into the Everglades’ dense landscape to escape the violence.

As Palinov and his pilot pursue their goal, Pete and Frank Westlake, a police chief with vested interests in stopping Palinovov’s smuggling ring, chase after them. Westlake chooses to prioritize saving the remaining immigrants over arresting Palinovov, leading to a separation between the pursuers. Pete, undeterred, continues his pursuit alone, navigating through the deadly wilderness. During the pursuit, the pilot is bitten by a poisonous snake and is left behind, unable to continue.

In the final moments, Pete locates the concealed boat and offers it to Palinovov in exchange for Marianne’s safety. During the tense exchange, Palinovov attempts to shoot Pete and Marianne, but his attempt fails as Pete manages to keep him at bay. With the boat’s fuel tank emptied, Pete reassures Marianne that Palinovov won’t escape far, promising safety and a chance at a new life away from danger. The story ends with the hope of a future built on resilience and the courage to survive against all odds.
