What's After the Movie
Jay B. Barney (born October 8, 1954) is a distinguished American academic and one of the most influential scholars in the field of strategic management. Born in Walnut Creek, California, Barney spent his formative years in San Bruno, California, before graduating from San Carlos High School in 1972. He pursued higher education at Brigham Young University, where he majored in sociology and graduated summa cum laude in December 1974. Continuing his academic journey, Barney enrolled in a PhD program in sociology at Yale University in 1976, laying the foundation for his future contributions to management theory. His professional career began in 1980 when he joined the faculty at the Anderson Graduate School of Management at UCLA. Over the subsequent decades, he established himself at several prestigious institutions, moving to the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University in 1986, then to the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University in 1994, where he held the prestigious Chase Chair for Excellence in Corporate Strategy, and since 2012, he has served as a Presidential Professor and the Lassonde Chair in Social Entrepreneurship at the David Eccles School of Business, University of Utah.
Barney's scholarly impact is perhaps best exemplified by his seminal 1991 paper, which introduced the VRIO framework—standing for Valuable, Rare, Costly to Imitate, and exploited by Organization—providing a comprehensive model for analyzing firm resources and sustained competitive advantage. This work has become foundational in strategic management literature, generating over 225,000 Google citations and establishing him as the most widely cited academic at the University of Utah. Beyond the VRIO framework, Barney collaborated with Dr. Sharon Alvarez in the mid-2000s to develop new theoretical approaches to entrepreneurship, bridging resource-based theory with entrepreneurial action. He currently serves as the editor of the Academy of Management Review, one of the field's premier journals. His extensive list of honors includes the Academy of Management Scholarly Contributions Award (2010), the Irwin Outstanding Educator Award (2005), and honorary doctorates from universities in Spain, Denmark, and Sweden. In 2024, he received the Rosenblatt Prize of Excellence from the University of Utah. Residing in Park City, Utah, Barney is married with three children, balancing his prolific academic career with family life.
