A Brother’s Kiss 1997

Mick [Michael Raynor] and Lex [Nick Chinlund] are brothers who grew up in Harlem under harsh circumstances. Their mother, Doreen [Cathy Moriarty], was a diabetic with a drinking problem and had a hard time saying no to the men in her life. While she wasn’t a sex worker, she depended on the small gifts her lovers would bring, and as children Mick and Lex learned to accept this as the way things were. One night, while walking in the park, the younger Mick was molested by a cop, and Lex—older and strong—attacked the officer, an act that sent Mick to reform school.

Years later, Mick becomes a policeman; though he tries to bury the childhood incident, he still bears emotional scars and carries a sense of sexual dysfunction. Lex has slid further into trouble, bouncing in and out of bad choices and holding a going-nowhere bus-driving job. He maintains a combative relationship with Debbie [Rosie Perez], the mother of his child, while also selling drugs for local dealer Lefty Louie, portrayed by a trusted local network—the role played by John Leguizamo. His own drug habit has grown so large that it outpaces his sales, pulling him deeper into a cycle that’s hard to break.

Mick tries to look out for his big brother, offering support and protection where he can, yet the weight of their shared past—and the present dangers around them—may be too heavy a burden to lift. The brothers’ bond remains a persistent thread, shaping their choices and the tough realities of Harlem they must navigate. In the end, the film paints a quiet, unflinching portrait of family loyalty tested by hardship, addiction, and the long shadows of a difficult upbringing.
