On the eve of his return to Spain from Alta California, the enigmatic mercenary Diego reunites with his old friend Miguel Vega de la Serna, who is poised to take up the governorship of Nueva Aragón. Miguel’s uncle Don Fernando has died in a malaria-free region, passing the reins to Colonel Huerta, a dictatorial and unscrupulous power in the region. Diego warns Miguel that Nueva Aragón is ruled by greed and hatred; his warning proves tragically accurate when Huerta’s men assassinate Miguel that very evening. Diego vows to avenge his friend by taking his place, but not before a dying Miguel makes Diego swear that the new governor will never kill.

As Huerta presses to appoint himself both military and civil governor, Diego slips in disguised as de la Serna, masking his prowess with a playful facade to ease Huerta’s fears. He quickly learns that Huerta is not only a ruthless despot but also a dangerous swordsman, a combination that makes the path to justice perilous and thrilling.

Joined by Miguel’s devoted mute servant Joaquín and aided by the Great Dane known as Assassin, Diego moves among the people to see how fear shapes life in Nueva Aragón. The innocent are punished for speaking truth, while the guilty who cheat are labeled as “respectable” citizens, a reality that fuels Diego’s resolve.

Inspired by Chico’s tales of Zorro, a freedom-loving fox spirit, Diego crafts his own black-garbed alter ego and launches a campaign for justice. The street-level clashes become part theater and part rebellion, with a riotous, action-packed marketplace brawl that signals a new, daring chapter in the town’s history.

Diego repeatedly outsmarts Huerta and his men, and he stages a daring kidnapping, presenting himself as both the region’s governor and as Zorro, to free wrongfully imprisoned people and to fool Huerta into thinking both identities are dead.

Feeling secure at last, Huerta forces aristocrat Hortensia Polido into marriage. He shoots Brother Francisco when the monk leads protesters to the church steps, just as [Zorro] reappears. Brother Francisco’s murder serves as the catalyst that finally frees Diego from his vow to Miguel, and Zorro is then free to confront Huerta in an epic, sword-swinging duel to the death. The confrontation ends with Diego’s hard-won victory after a lengthy, cinematic battle, sealing his vengeance and the town’s hope for justice.
