The narrative unfolds in Japan, stretching from the early 1990s to the present day of 2008, revolving around a young boy named Takaki Tōno. In 1991, as he is in elementary school in Tokyo, Takaki quickly forms a poignant friendship with Akari Shinohara, a new student. In Japanese culture, their use of each other’s first names—sans honorifics—indicates a deep intimacy and connection between them.
