What's After the Movie
Vishal Bhardwaj (born 4 August 1965) is an Indian filmmaker renowned for his multifaceted roles as a director, producer, screenwriter, music composer and playback singer in Hindi cinema. Born in Chandpur, Uttar Pradesh, into a modest family—his mother Satya was a homemaker and his father Ram a sugarcane inspector and occasional lyricist—Bhardwaj showed early musical talent, composing his first song at seventeen which was later used by music director Usha Khanna in the 1985 film Yaar Kasam. After completing his studies at Hindu College, University of Delhi, he moved to Mumbai intending to pursue music composition, initially working for CBS in Delhi and later breaking through with the children's film Abhay (1995). His breakthrough as a composer came with Gulzar’s Maachis (1996), earning him the Filmfare R. D. Burman Award for New Music Talent, and subsequent scores for cult classics such as Satya (1998) and Godmother (1999) garnered him multiple National Film Awards. Transitioning to direction, Bhardwaj debuted with Makdee (2002), a children's film that screened at Cannes, and soon after embarked on an ambitious Shakespearean trilogy: Maqbool (2003) adapted from Macbeth, Omkara (2006) from Othello, and Haider (2014) from Hamlet, each re‑imagining the tragedies within Indian socio‑political contexts. His distinctive style blends gritty realism, moral ambiguity, and lyrical musicality, often collaborating with lyricist‑mentor Gulzar, whom he affectionately calls his “father”. Beyond these, he directed genre‑spanning works such as the twin‑driven thriller Kaminey (2009), the black comedy 7 Khoon Maaf (2011), and the political satire Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013). As a producer under VB Pictures, he supported films like Ishqiya (2010) and its sequel Dedh Ishqiya (2014), while also co‑authoring the acclaimed true‑crime drama Talvar (2015). Married to playback singer Rekha Bhardwaj, he balances a private family life with a prolific career that continues to shape contemporary Indian cinema.
