Aleksei Yuryevich German (1938‑2013) was a renowned Russian film director and screenwriter whose work is celebrated for its uncompromising realism and stark depiction of Soviet history. Born on 20 July 1938 in Moscow, he grew up in a period of intense political upheaval, an environment that would profoundly shape his cinematic vision. After graduating from the prestigious Moscow State University of Culture and Arts, German began his career in the Soviet film industry, initially working as an assistant director and screenwriter before directing his own features.
