Paramount Reportedly Ends Chris Pine-Led Star Trek Kelvin Timeline

According to a new report on the state of Paramount Pictures, the studio has abandoned plans for a fourth film featuring the cast of the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek reboot series. The project, commonly referred to as Star Trek 4, would have reunited actors Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoë Saldaña, but has now been shelved under new leadership. While Paramount remains committed to the Star Trek franchise, the path forward will not include the crew from the Kelvin Timeline.

The End of a Long Development Road

The development of a sequel to 2016’s Star Trek Beyond has been notoriously troubled. The film was first announced prior to the release of Beyond and was initially conceived to feature Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as George Kirk. Following the film’s underwhelming box office performance, the project was repeatedly reworked. Over the years, various filmmakers, including Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, were attached to pitch new ideas, though none came to fruition.

A History of False Starts

  • 2018-2021: Following the box office results of Star Trek Beyond, the sequel was sent back for budget reductions and creative overhauls.
  • July 2021: Director Matt Shakman (WandaVision) was hired to helm the film, targeting a December 2023 release date.
  • February 2022: Paramount publicly announced the return of the main cast, a move that reportedly surprised the actors as no formal deals were in place.
  • August 2022: Shakman exited the project to direct Fantastic Four, marking the last significant update on this version of the film.

What’s Next for Star Trek on Film?

The report confirms that Paramount is still actively looking to produce a new Star Trek film. Another project, an origin story set within the Kelvin Timeline to be directed by Toby Haynes (Andor) and produced by Simon Kinberg, has been in development. It is unclear if this is the project the studio will now prioritize or if it will start from scratch with a completely new concept. This decision means the Kelvin Timeline crew will not receive a final, conclusive chapter akin to the send-offs given to the casts of The Original Series or The Next Generation.
