Noah Hawley Reveals Why Paramount Canceled His Star Trek Movie

Noah Hawley, the creator behind acclaimed series like Fargo and the upcoming Alien: Earth, has publicly detailed the reasons Paramount Pictures scrapped his planned Star Trek movie. Hawley’s film, which was in active pre-production, was shut down following a change in studio leadership who questioned the viability of an original story without a familiar cast.

The Original Pitch and Sudden Cancellation

Hawley was brought on to write and direct a new Star Trek film in November 2019. His vision was to move away from the cast of the J.J. Abrams-produced Kelvin timeline films and explore a new era with a fresh crew, reportedly considering actors like Rami Malek and Cate Blanchett. The project gained approval from then-studio president Jim Gianopulos, and pre-production advanced to the stage of booking soundstages in Australia.

The cancellation occurred when Emma Watts was appointed President of the Paramount Motion Picture Group in July 2020. According to Hawley, one of Watts’s first decisions was to halt his film over concerns that audiences might not embrace an untested cast. This decision prioritized a different project aimed at reuniting the cast from the 2009 Star Trek film.

Aftermath and Franchise Future

Paramount’s plans for a fourth Kelvin timeline film, announced in 2022, encountered their own development hurdles, including failed contract negotiations with the cast. After years of stagnation, that project was ultimately canceled. The studio is now moving forward with a new reboot to be directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the filmmaking duo behind Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

Rumors suggested Hawley’s script involved a global virus plotline, which coincidentally aligned with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, though this was not the official reason for the film’s cancellation. The situation highlights the challenges of developing major franchises amidst shifting studio strategies.
