Speaking with The Times, DiCaprio questioned whether movie theaters might follow the path of jazz bars, becoming specialized venues in an era dominated by streaming platforms and rapid technological change.

Cinemas at a Crossroads

DiCaprio observed that the industry is changing at “lightning speed,” citing the disappearance of documentaries from cinemas and the limited theatrical window for dramas as evidence of a “huge transition.” He expressed hope that real visionaries would still have the opportunity to create unique work for the big screen, but acknowledged that outcome is uncertain.

Skepticism Towards Artificial Intelligence

The actor’s commentary extended to the rise of artificial intelligence in entertainment. While speaking with Time Magazine, DiCaprio acknowledged AI’s potential as an enhancement tool for filmmakers, but firmly stated that anything considered authentic art must come from a human being. He compared AI-generated content, like song mashups, to ephemeral “internet junk” that lacks a lasting human anchor, regardless of its initial brilliance.

No Directorial Ambitions

Despite his deep involvement in filmmaking, DiCaprio confirmed he has no intention of stepping behind the camera as a director. He expressed immense respect for directors like Martin Scorsese, stating he could “never do anything close” to their work. DiCaprio prefers to focus entirely on his acting craft, delving deeply into characters, and has chosen to be a “voyeur” of the directorial process instead.

Upcoming Project with Scorsese

DiCaprio and Scorsese are set to collaborate for a seventh time on an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s novel, What Happens At Night. The film will co-star Jennifer Lawrence and follows a married couple traveling to Europe to adopt a child, only for their stay at a grand hotel to take a sinister turn.
