The first look at Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista in their new buddy action film, The Wrecking Crew, has been revealed. Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle), the Amazon MGM Studios production unites the two stars as brothers forced to investigate their father’s murder in Hawaii.

Film Premise and Character Details

The film follows Johnny, a suspended reservation cop from Oklahoma played by Momoa, and James, a disciplined Navy SEAL commander portrayed by Bautista. They reunite for their father’s funeral in Hawaii, only to be drawn into a conspiracy involving international investors and rampant development on the island. Director Soto describes Johnny as a more nihilistic character who relies on alcohol, contrasting with James, who is a “super tough” GI with a perfect family.

Soto’s Thematic Vision

While The Wrecking Crew promises ample action and comedy derived from the brothers’ rivalry, Soto emphasizes the film’s deeper thematic layers. He aimed to explore three avenues: the investigative plot, the emotional sibling dynamic, and a commentary on the world. The director drew parallels between his home, Puerto Rico, and the setting of Oahu, Hawaii, highlighting the reality beyond tourist postcards.

A Story About More Than Action

Soto specifically wanted to showcase the everyday lives of people in Hawaii and address issues of corruption and greed leading to the displacement of Indigenous people. “Once you pass the tourism board’s pictures and postcards, you’re faced with the reality of everyday Hawaiians,” Soto explained, noting this is a shared experience with Puerto Rico. The film will delve into the “erasure of Indigenous people” and the fight against gentrification.

Film’s Development

The project originated from a 2021 Twitter pitch by Dave Bautista for a collaboration with Jason Momoa. While the actors have previously shared the screen in the series See and the Dune films, The Wrecking Crew marks their first lead pairing.
