Director Edgar Wright is offering new insights into his highly anticipated adaptation of Stephen King’s dystopian novel, The Running Man. In a recent interview, Wright contrasted his film’s approach with modern action franchises, highlighting a focus on suspense and realism over stylized combat. Unlike protagonists who actively seek confrontation, Ben Richards is trying to avoid attention and survive a deadly reality TV game. “This has as much suspense as action, because you’re in a movie where your lead character is trying not to attract attention,” Wright stated. The film maintains a tight perspective, staying with Ben throughout his ordeal and only revealing information as he discovers it.

A key element of this realistic feel is the commitment to practical, in-camera effects. Wright pointed to influences like Kevin Costner and Harrison Ford, aiming for a relatable level of action. “The explosions are real, people are flying past you,” he explained, noting the film avoids “random wirework and relying on visual effects.” This methodology is intended to make the extraordinary odds faced by an ordinary person feel more immediate and intense.

Despite changes to the original story’s ending, co-written by Wright and Michael Bacall, the core themes remain.
