Ryan Coogler Details Original 'Black Panther 2' Plans for T'Challa and Son
Director Ryan Coogler has revealed his initial story for the sequel to 'Black Panther,' which centered on T'Challa and his young son during an attack by Namor. Following Chadwick Boseman's passing, the film was completely rewritten, with elements of the original concept appearing in 'Wakanda Forever's post-credit scene.

In a recent interview, ‘Black Panther’ director Ryan Coogler shared the original plot for the sequel, which was entirely reimagined after the tragic death of star Chadwick Boseman. The filmmaker detailed a story focused on the father-son bond between T’Challa and a young prince, a narrative thread that was ultimately woven into the final film in a different form.
On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler explained the sequel’s initial concept was built around a Wakandan tradition called the ‘Ritual of Eight.’ This ritual required an eight-year-old prince to spend eight days in the wilderness with his father, T’Challa, during which the child could ask any question and the king must answer. The central conflict arose when the water-based antagonist Namor attacked Wakanda during this sacred, unbreakable ritual, forcing T’Challa to defend his nation with his son permanently at his side. Coogler described the original script as “chock-full” of these ideas, noting that the dynamic would have pushed Boseman’s performance to new limits. He expressed deep personal affection for the unmade script but also the profound impact of having to abandon it.
Chadwick Boseman’s death in August 2020 from colon cancer necessitated a complete overhaul of the project. Coogler revealed that Boseman was never able to read the initial treatment due to his declining health. The director described the experience as damaging “probably irreparably,” underscoring the personal and professional loss. The original plan positioned Boseman’s T’Challa as a central figure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future, following the departures of characters like Iron Man and Captain America. His passing, and Marvel’s decision not to recast the role, created a significant narrative shift for the franchise.
While the final film, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ became a story about women with Shuri taking up the mantle, it preserved a key element from Coogler’s original idea. The post-credit scene reveals that T’Challa and Nakia had a son named Toussaint, whose Wakandan name is T’Challa. This serves as both an in-universe tribute to the fallen king and a meta-textual homage to Boseman. The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning a Best Picture Oscar nomination and grossing over $1.3 billion worldwide. Rumors suggest the young prince Toussaint may eventually become the new Black Panther in future MCU installments, allowing the hero’s legacy to continue without recasting Boseman. Coogler is set to return to direct the third film.
