Brendan Fraser Returns for New The Mummy Sequel with Rachel Weisz

Universal Pictures is moving forward with a new installment in The Mummy franchise, marking the return of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as Richard “Rick” O’Connell and Evelyn O’Connell. The film is planned as a direct sequel to the first two movies, effectively ignoring the events of 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Project Details and Creative Team

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for revitalizing the Scream franchise, are set to helm the project. The screenplay will be written by David Coggeshall, whose credits include Orphan: First Kill. This new sequel represents a course correction for Universal after the failed launch of its Dark Universe, which began with the 2017 Tom Cruise-led reboot.

Competing Mummy Project from Warner Bros.

While Universal revives its action-adventure series, Warner Bros. is preparing its own take on the mummy mythos. Titled The Resurrected, this film is directed by Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise) and produced by James Wan and Jason Blum. The plot centers on a father whose missing daughter returns, only to be possessed by an ancient Egyptian spirit. The cast includes Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, and Verónica Falcón. The Resurrected is scheduled for release on April 17, 2026.

What’s Next for The Mummy Franchise?

With two distinct Mummy films in development, audiences can expect different interpretations of the classic monster. Warner Bros. aims for a horror-centric approach, while Universal returns to the franchise that blended action and adventure. A release date for the Fraser and Weisz sequel has not been announced.
