Rodger Bumpass

Rodger Bumpass (born November 20, 1951) is an American actor and comedian whose career has spanned over four decades, earning him a place in the annals of modern animation voice work. Raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, he grew up in a family that ran a dry‑cleaning business, and from an early age he idolized legendary voice artists like Mel Blanc while mastering impressions of Looney Tunes characters. After graduating from Arkansas State University in 1976 with a BA in radio‑TV and a theater minor, Bumpass moved to New York in June 1977, launching a professional theater path that soon merged with the burgeoning world of comedy and voice acting. In the late 1970s he joined National Lampoon productions, touring with the road show That's Not Funny, That's Sick and appearing in the HBO special Disco Beaver from Outer Space, experiences that sharpened his comedic timing and vocal versatility. His voice‑over breakthrough arrived with roles such as The Chief in Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?, Doctor Light in Teen Titans, and Professor Membrane in Invader Zim, but it was the iconic portrayal of Squidward Tentacles on SpongeBob SquarePants that cemented his status as a household name. Bumpass has reprised Squidward in numerous video games and specials, earning a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2012 for Outstanding Performer in an Animated Program. Beyond SpongeBob, his credits include Mr. Besser in The Kids from Room 402 and countless additional characters across animated series, films, and interactive media. His personal life saw a reunion with high‑school sweetheart Angela VanZandt, whom he married on July 27 2019. Although a 2016 DUI arrest briefly made headlines, Nickelodeon confirmed his continued involvement with the series, underscoring his professional resilience. Throughout his enduring career, Bumpass remains celebrated for his distinctive vocal timbre, comedic nuance, and the indelible mark he has left on generations of animated entertainment fans.
