National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie’s Island Adventure 2003

Eddie Johnson, played by [Randy Quaid], and his family are trying to start fresh several years after leaving the Nevada bomb-test site. Eddie now works at the Chicago Atomic Testing Agency, where his job involves measuring brain waves for any signs of radioactivity. Financial trouble lingers— the dirt farm is foreclosed and the RV is repossessed—so Audrey Griswold, played by [Dana Barron], takes them in along with Catherine Johnson, played by [Miriam Flynn], their dog Snots, and Clark III, known as Third, played by [Jake Thomas]. The rest of their children stay with their grandmother. Eddie hopes this new assignment will bring stability, but his optimism is fragile, especially as Third watches his father wrestle with the uncertainties of employment.

When a chimpanzee named Roy outperforms him on every cognitive test, Eddie is fired just before Christmas. Eddie’s harsh remark to Roy leads to a biting incident, and Doornitz, his boss, worries about a potential lawsuit. To preempt trouble, Doornitz offers Eddie and his family an all-expenses-paid Christmas vacation to Maluka, a sunny archipelago in the South Pacific. The group—Eddie, Catherine, Third, Audrey, Uncle Nick, and Aunt Jessica, who has recently reconciled with Nick—accepts the invitation. Aunt Jessica, played by [Beverly Garland], arrives on Maluka to mend old tensions, while Uncle Nick, played by [Ed Asner], adds his prickly, comic edge to the trip. Roy the chimpanzee remains a silent, unpredictable presence in Eddie’s life, and Muka Luka Miki, played by [Sung-Hi Lee], greets the travelers as their guide for the island.

A warm welcome gives way to island adventure. After a festive cookout, the family boards a boat to tour nearby islands, hoping for a carefree holiday. Eddie’s attempt to fish goes awry when he hooks a massive shark that drags the boat far from shore. In the chaos, Nick accidentally wrecks the boat against a coral reef, leaving the group shipwrecked on a seemingly deserted island. Stranded with limited supplies, they scramble to survive and, more importantly, to find a way back to civilization. Eddie, determined to prove he can provide for his family, builds a fire and goes hunting with Snots, tracking a baby pig through dense jungle before facing an aggressive wild boar. The encounter ends with Eddie killing the boar with a homemade spear, a moment that earns Third’s pride and prompts Catherine and the others to cheer their father’s resourcefulness.

On Christmas morning, the family exchanges handmade gifts and unveils a grass hut that Third and Eddie constructed, a small symbol of resilience and a promise that they can build a home even far from the bank’s reach. Yet the hut collapses as soon as they close the door, underscoring the fragility of their makeshift shelter but also the strength of their bond. A seaplane appears, piloted by Melbourne Jack, played by [Julian Stone], who explains that the island is King Halihalki Island and that a resort lies ten miles away on the other side. Jack’s head injury hinders a quick rescue, but Eddie takes charge, coordinating with the Maluka tower to guide a safe water landing.

With Jack incapacitated, Eddie’s calm leadership and growing skill enable him to land the plane safely, saving his family from being stranded any longer. As Aunt Jessica completes her reconciliation with Nick, Doornitz arrives once more with news that Eddie has earned his old job back. Yet Eddie reveals a surprising shift: he has found a new purpose on Maluka and has become a pilot on the island, with Roy serving as his co-pilot. The calm resolution hints at a future where family, perseverance, and a fresh start can coexist, even in the most unlikely of places.
