What's After the Movie
Remo De Angelis (30 July 1926 – 9 October 2014) was a prolific Italian film actor, stunt coordinator and painter whose career spanned the golden age of Italian genre cinema. Born in the small town of Roccamonfina in the province of Caserta, De Angelis entered the film world in the mid‑1950s, making his on‑screen debut with minor roles in historical epics such as The Mysterious Swordsman (1956) and The Violent Patriot (1956). By the late 1950s he secured steadier work, appearing in Nel Segno di Roma (1959) and portraying the mythic Prometheus in Riccardo Freda’s Maciste all’inferno (1962). Over the next two decades he became a familiar face in the Spaghetti Western boom, delivering gritty performances as henchmen, sheriffs and outlaws in titles like The Great Silence (1968), Texas, Adios (1966) and The Unholy Four (1970). His physicality and willingness to perform dangerous sequences made him a trusted stunt professional, and he frequently doubled for leading actors while also taking credited roles, such as the vice‑sheriff in Tonino Valerii’s Taste for Killing (1968) and Mario Ansuini in My Dear Killer (1972).
Beyond his acting and stunt work, De Angelis expanded his expertise behind the camera, serving as assistant director on productions ranging from 1001 Nights (1968) to the comedy National Lampoon’s European Vacation (1985), and as production manager on early projects like Noi duri (1960). In parallel with his film career he pursued painting, developing a personal artistic style that reflected the dramatic intensity of his cinematic work. De Angelis passed away in Rome at the age of 88, leaving behind a rich legacy of genre films that continue to be celebrated by cult audiences and scholars of Italian cinema alike.
