Django is wounded and his wife is killed when the gold transport he guards is attacked by the men of his “friend” David Barry, a figure eager to turn the treasure into political power.

Django pretends to be dead and changes direction, taking work as a hangman to spare the condemned victims of Barry’s schemes. He quietly builds a small, disciplined band from among the condemned, with the aim of turning their ordeal into a weapon to expose Barry and bring him to justice. The plan is for the supposed “hanged” men to intercept a future assault on the gold convoy and seize Barry’s conspirators to gather solid evidence, but Garcia, who had earlier saved Django during a clash within the group, convinces the others to seize the gold for themselves instead. Garcia then eliminates the others in the ensuing chaos.

Django ultimately saves Yankee Jack’s Wife from hanging, and she, in turn, helps him after Barry captures him. Garcia soon expresses remorse for his treachery, explaining that poverty pushed him toward betrayal, and he assists Django in drawing Barry into a final trap in the graveyard. There, Django digs up his own coffin and turns the weapon stored inside into a deadly finale, wiping out Barry and his gang. Garcia dies in the struggle, and Django leaves a sack of gold to Garcia’s wife “for you and the children” before he rides away.
