What's After the Movie
Peter Arne (born Peter Randolph Michael Albrecht on 29 September 1918 in Kuala Lumpur, then part of British Malaya) was a prolific British actor whose career spanned nearly four decades. He began his theatrical training in provincial repertory companies and quickly gained a reputation for portraying unsmiling villains and disciplined German officers, a niche that would define much of his screen work. Over the course of his career he appeared in more than fifty films, including notable British classics such as Ice Cold in Alex (1958), The Moonraker (1958), Conspiracy of Hearts (1960) and the celebrated musical comedy Victor/Victoria (1982). His television résumé was equally extensive, with recurring guest spots on series like The Avengers, Danger Man, and The Protectors, as well as a regular role in the second series of Triangle in 1982‑83. On stage he tackled demanding roles, most famously playing the dual parts of the Duke and Dr. Sanson Carrasco in the London production of Man of La Mancha in 1968. In addition to acting, Arne ran a small antiques business, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. His personal life was marred by a scandal in the late 1940s when, together with partner Jack Corke, he and his former associate Mary Renault were involved in a fraudulent housing venture that squandered Renault’s investment and led to legal disputes. Arne’s life ended tragically on 1 August 1983, when he was found bludgeoned to death in his Knightsbridge flat; police concluded that a destitute Italian schoolteacher he had been supporting was responsible. The actor’s untimely murder deprives British cinema of one of its most reliable character actors, whose versatile performances continue to be appreciated by aficionados of classic film and television.
