Noah Baumbach

Noah Baumbach, born on September 3, 1969, is a renowned American filmmaker noted for creating light-hearted comedies set in New York City. His work is largely inspired by legendary directors like Woody Allen and Whit Stillman. Baumbach is widely recognized for his collaborations with Wes Anderson, Adam Driver, and his wife, Greta Gerwig. His early attention came from his films like Kicking and Screaming (1995), and Mr. Jealousy (1997), but it was his breakthrough film The Squid and the Whale (2005) that got him nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He started collaborating with Gerwig on Greenberg (2010) and continued with Frances Ha (2013), Mistress America (2015), White Noise (2022), and Barbie (2023). Baumbach's film Marriage Story (2019) earned him his second Best Original Screenplay nomination.

Baumbach was born to a Jewish father, Jonathan Baumbach, an author and a co-founder of the publishing house, Fiction Collective, and a Protestant mother, Georgia Brown, a film critic for The Village Voice. His parents' divorce during his adolescence served as inspiration for his movie The Squid and the Whale. Baumbach is a BA in English from Vassar College and his early inspirations included the films like The Jerk, Animal House, Heaven Can Wait, The World According to Garp, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. Baumbach's filmography is marked by collaborations with fellow industry mavericks, intricate plotlines, and poignantly funny takes on contemporary life. He draws heavily from his early life experiences and observations, weaving them into the rich tapestry of his films.
