Machiko Ono

Machiko Ono (born November 4, 1981) is a celebrated Japanese actress whose career began in the late 1990s after being discovered in a rural junior‑high school in Nishiyoshino, Nara Prefecture. Naomi Kawase noticed her while she was cleaning shoe boxes and cast her in the lead role of Suzaku, a film that won the Camera d'Or at Cannes in 1997, instantly thrusting Ono into international recognition. Her performance earned her the Best Actress award at the Singapore Film Festival, establishing her as a formidable talent early on.

Over the next decade, Ono collaborated with a range of acclaimed directors, including Shinji Aoyama, Akihiko Shiota, Nobuhiro Yamashita, and Isao Yukisada, honing a versatile screen presence that blended subtle intensity with emotional depth.
