Lluís Homar

Lluís Homar i Toboso, born on 20 April 1957 in Barcelona, Spain, is a renowned Spanish actor and theater director whose career spans more than four decades. From his early days as an altar boy at Sant Joan d’Horta, he pursued a diverse education, studying law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona while also taking courses at the Institut del Teatre, laying a multidisciplinary foundation that would later inform his artistic sensibilities. In 1974, Homar made his theatrical debut in a production of Othello under director Angel Carmona, and a year later he joined the influential Teatre del Escorpi, appearing in productions such as Terra Baixa and Quiriquibú, which helped cement his reputation as a versatile stage performer. His commitment to collaborative theater culminated in 1976 when he co‑founded the cooperative company Teatre Lliure, where he acted in over thirty plays and served as artistic director from 1992 to 1998, shaping Barcelona’s contemporary theater scene. Transitioning to screen, Homar’s first major film role arrived in 1981 with The Time of the Doves, and he later achieved international recognition through Pedro Almodóvar’s Bad Education (2004) and Broken Embraces (2009). His portrayal of the empathetic robot Max in Kike Maíllo’s sci‑fi film Eva (2011) earned him both the Goya and Gaudí awards for Best Supporting Actor, highlighting his capacity to blend humanity with the fantastical. Beyond cinema, Homar has delivered powerful television performances, notably as King Juan Carlos I in 23‑F: El día más difícil del rey and as the Roman general Servio Sulpicio Galba in Hispania, la leyenda and Imperium. In 2016 he received the prestigious Nacho Martínez Award at the Gijón International Film Festival, underscoring his enduring impact on Spanish performing arts. Today he resides in Canet de Mar, continuing to influence both stage and screen.
