He gained worldwide fame for playing Morgan Jones in the AMC series The Walking Dead and its spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, along with his role as DCI Tony Gates in Line of Duty series one. On American television, he depicted the enigmatic Robert Hawkins in the CBS series Jericho and Detective Joe Geddes in the AMC series Low Winter Sun. Critical acclaim greeted his creation and star performance in the 2018 Sky Atlantic drama series Save Me and its follow-up Save Me Too, which won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Drama Series 2021.
