What's After the Movie

Kelly AuCoin

Kelly AuCoin (born February 14, 1967) is an American actor whose career spans more than three decades across film, television, and stage. He was born in the Portland suburb of Hillsboro, Oregon, to Les and Susan AuCoin, and spent his childhood moving between Oregon and Washington, D.C., where his father served as a United States Congressman from 1975 to 1993. As a child he even appeared in one of his father's campaign commercials, famously washing the family car to illustrate fiscal prudence. AuCoin attended Georgetown Day School before earning a degree at Oberlin College, laying the academic groundwork for his later artistic pursuits. After moving to New York, he quickly found work in daytime soaps such as Guiding Light and The City, and began to accumulate guest spots on a litany of network dramas, including early appearances on The Sopranos and Law & Order. His persistence paid off, and by the mid‑2010s he secured breakthrough recurring roles on high‑profile series, most notably as the miserly “Dollar” Bill Stern on Showtime’s Billions and as Pastor Tim on FX’s The Americans. These performances solidified his reputation as a reliable character actor capable of delivering both sharp wit and nuanced gravitas. Beyond the small screen, AuCoin has built an impressive film résumé, appearing in Steven Spielberg’s The Post, the culinary‑centric Julie & Julia, and the political thriller The Kingdom, among others. His stage work is equally distinguished: he portrayed Octavius in the 2005 Broadway revival of Julius Caesar starring Denzel Washington, earned a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble for the Signature Theatre revival of The Wayside Motor Inn, and has remained an active presence at venues like the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, La Jolla Playhouse, and Playwrights Horizons. Married to award‑winning dancer Carolyn Hall since 1999, the couple resides in Brooklyn, New York, where they continue to support the arts community. Though private about family size, AuCoin’s professional life continues to flourish, marked by a steady stream of compelling roles that showcase his versatility and dedication to the craft.
